At the age of seven, Tom Brown Jr. met Stalking Wolf, a Lipan Apache elder whom he came to know as “Grandfather.” Throughout the next 10 years Grandfather taught the young boy all he knew about tracking, awareness and survival. In 1978, to fulfill his life’s vision, Tom founded “The Tracker School” which presently features over 75 courses designed to pass on and preserve the knowledge and wisdom of his mentor Stalking Wolf. Tom currently continues teaching, writing and lecturing on his physical and spiritual experiences under Grandfather’s tutelage and of his own wanderings and discoveries in the wilderness.

I wonder sometimes if you really, truly know just how much people love you & care about you. I know you have made earth-shaking differences in my life – I would never, ever have had this full, amazing life I’ve had so far were it not for that fateful day in 1985 I walked into your Standard class. It’s made all the difference & I am forever grateful, forever in your debt… I can’t even express how much.

Keep up the good work I have followed you and a couple other well known trackers for many years. I am retired from the NRp in MAryland . I am a tracker myself taught by my blood grandfather and Cherokee Elder, A bit out of practice now having trashed both knees in a bad fall hopefully when they do the replacements I will be able to get back at it, thats the plans anyway.

I haven’t hooked in to Tracker School since the late nineties and just got the voice in my head telling me to google Tom’s school and see how things are going. It was great to find this new website and blog! Tom I just want to thank you for the many classes I took from 1988 – 1994 – I am so grateful. I learned so much…and passed it on. I’ve taught the skills on and off since that time, and raised my son with these skills. For the last five years or so, he’s taught a couple classes with me a year. ( I just do two short one day classes, but it’s something, and the sharing goes on). I am so inspired to see how many people you are reaching. It’s awesome. Keep up the amazing, so necessary sharing of knowledge. The earth will survive, and we will create a new beautiful garden together! (alias Robin Hood with the tights, Wool Swandry, and 3 knives….who couldn’t get her eye off the light reflecting from the tracksssss. 🙂 )

Hi Tom, just wanted to thank you for your dedication to teaching all of us. I have read 6 of your books so far and they have taught me so much. The only thing is that they have got me loving the outdoors much more than I used to and due to strict family rules I am not able to spend much time outside. They really consider the woods a very dangerous place, not to be entered without one of themselves. It’s tough. They only walk on the gravel road. They’re also afraid of chiggers and ticks,(which we have alot of) and they think that the woods are always harboring criminals. I am not allowed outside alone, and I’m already in my teens. Mom is paranoid when it comes to nature, yet when it comes to civilization she is much more lax. She also hates the heat and the cold and gets attacked by insects more than I do. I’m also worried about the economy collapse, and I can’t even start a fire without matches. I have tried and failed. But I do believe that I am much better off than those in the cities. Enjoy your freedom of the wilderness, and explore it for me, brother.
To be clear, Tom…my level and the firmness of my commitment is unquestioningly absolute… ever since the very first Pine Barrens philosophy, I’ve been committed to this Path and re-commit to it often. My life has undergone tremendous change because of the commitments I made – all for the good of everything. I’d make that same commitment again in a heartbeat – and often do.
BUT – I just do not have the money to attend classes, not even online ones right now. As much as I would love to attend Apprentice and other classes, I simply cannot. Perhaps things will change. But for now, I have to miss whatever it is you’re teaching in these classes; it just kills me to miss what I know could be critical information. Your courses dangle like wrapped candy in front of my spirit… teasing, always just out of reach… and wrapped, because I don’t fully know what’s in them.
I am in the process of writing a book, my first. It has been churning around in the back of my mind for some 40 years… including the many years with you (since 1985 when I took my Standard in Hackettstown). So perhaps if I get any income out of that, I’ll be able to attend classes. Right now all I have is full disability income, and sometimes at the end of the month, even that runs out.
If you ever wondered why it is “Sandra” doesn’t come to your courses anymore, it isn’t for lack of wanting to. It’s just the ever-present logistical obstacle… getting enough of those little green frog skins to pay for the course…

Underground Fires? – Tom, it seems even environmental experts are confused about underground fires and have difficulty understanding how they are started and how to prevent them; I believe you have some experience/knowledge with these phenomena and was hoping you could provide some information publicly that’s easy to copy/paste and spread to those who need it. Some of those professional and diy earth healers might benefit from knowing what to do or at least how to prevent these things.

Greetings Tom, I don’t know if you will see this message one day, but, as you say… don’t lose hope. I grew up with your magnificent story. How you met Grandfather, how you learned everything he taught you, how that ancient wisdom was preserved in you, and since I first read your story in Reader’s Selections, I always had your experiences in my daily life. I always felt “The-Spirit-that-moves-in-everything”, and “Good Medicine”. When he couldn’t handle life’s problems anymore, “he stopped resisting”, as in the anecdote about the cold and magically he could handle everything. When I go through the streets and see a footprint I think of your story. I would have liked to learn tracking, but the circumstances did not occur, but your wonderful story connected me forever with that philosophy of life. I was wondering if Tom had any ideas for treating a child with autism. I recently watch a movie called The Horse Boy, An intensely personal yet epic spiritual quest, The Horse Boy follows one Texas couple and their autistic son as they trek on horseback through the breathtaking steppes of Mongolia in an attempt to find shamanic healing for him. I was wondering if he knew of similar experiences of the shaman healing rituals and if he recommended any healers in the country?
