About Tom

At the age of seven, Tom Brown Jr. met Stalking Wolf, a Lipan Apache elder whom he came to know as “Grandfather.” Throughout the next 10 years Grandfather taught the young boy all he knew about tracking, awareness and survival. In 1978, to fulfill his life’s vision, Tom founded “The Tracker School” which presently features over 75 courses designed to pass on and preserve the knowledge and wisdom of his mentor Stalking Wolf.  Tom currently continues teaching, writing and lecturing on his physical and spiritual experiences under Grandfather’s tutelage and of his own wanderings and discoveries in the wilderness.

  1. Great idea, this blog! Love it! I wish, however, that I could make comments on individual posts – sometimes we might have extra information on a subject or want to pose a question. Comments being enabled might also spark conversations & information-sharing among students. Looking forward to more from your blog!

  2. Would love to give feedback on some of your posts – but can’t find a way to comment on the posts I want to do so. Will you be enabling comments?
    Thanks!

  3. As long time student I wish to say how much I appreciate the new ways you have used to reach more people, especially those who have not been able to make it to physical classes. The online classes are growing in strength and power of conveyance. Thank you Tom for all you are passing on to us.

  4. Hi Tom,
Best wishes to your brother for a speedy recovery! Have you created a twitter account yet? I heard you say you would, but I’m not sure how to find it.
Thanks so much for the knowledge you share,
    Sonja

  5. Just found out about Jim… wow. Had no idea. Please put out a bulleting or something if/when something like this happens so I/we can keep you & all concerned in my/our prayers.

I wonder sometimes if you really, truly know just how much people love you & care about you. I know you have made earth-shaking differences in my life – I would never, ever have had this full, amazing life I’ve had so far were it not for that fateful day in 1985 I walked into your Standard class. It’s made all the difference & I am forever grateful, forever in your debt… I can’t even express how much.

Anyway, please do let us know how Jim is doing. I will keep him in my prayers.

  6. Thanks for giving us a brief visual glimpse of Grandfather’s robe…
Also I am very interested in your experimental class , and all others , for that matter..

  7. I really appreciate your teachings. I attended your standard class and have done training with sone of your advanced students. I am so grateful.
I am from Colorado and having a really hard time with this mess. Thank you for your post earlier today. Staying awake.

    Love,
    Ryan

  10. Keep up the good work I have followed you and a couple other well known trackers for many years. I am retired from the NRp in MAryland . I am a tracker myself taught by my blood grandfather and Cherokee Elder, A bit out of practice now having trashed both knees in a bad fall hopefully when they do the replacements I will be able to get back at it, thats the plans anyway.

  11. Your feelings are right on, as Jesus tells us that just before he returns the world will be in a time of trouble that it has never witnessed before. This is not alarmist, in fact, we can take comfort from knowing this, and relying on our faith in God being in control

  12. Tom.. disappointed that there is no information of how to hear your broadcast… searched the site, the blog area etc. Please give us some follow up soon on how to connect. Thanks for all you do and provide to fellow trackers and interested grandmothers. Smile here please… Pat

  16. When I dreamt of the first WTC bombing, I thought it was odd … When I dreamt of the events of 911, I wrote a cautionary feature length screenplay about it, when I dreamt of the Great Recession, I made a film about it- HOBO GROVE – (on YouTube) When I dreamt that Chinese & Russians were dropping from the sky like RED DAWN on steroids, I’d hoped it was just a piece of undigested venison but now that I’ve found out they’re training red-blooded Chinese 20-something’s how to fly jets enmasse at the redding California airport, I knew that the possibility is becoming not just a dream. Thank you for promoting the collection of seeds … They will make all the difference … And remember to vote for anyone that didn’t play football … Too many have been elected with multiple mini-concussion permanent brain damage, which has resulted In generations being manipulated by those greedy bastards that didn’t play rough.

  19. I haven’t hooked in to Tracker School since the late nineties and just got the voice in my head telling me to google Tom’s school and see how things are going. It was great to find this new website and blog! Tom I just want to thank you for the many classes I took from 1988 – 1994 – I am so grateful. I learned so much…and passed it on. I’ve taught the skills on and off since that time, and raised my son with these skills. For the last five years or so, he’s taught a couple classes with me a year. ( I just do two short one day classes, but it’s something, and the sharing goes on). I am so inspired to see how many people you are reaching. It’s awesome. Keep up the amazing, so necessary sharing of knowledge. The earth will survive, and we will create a new beautiful garden together! (alias Robin Hood with the tights, Wool Swandry, and 3 knives….who couldn’t get her eye off the light reflecting from the tracksssss. 🙂 )

  20. Tom sorry to send this to you in this way. I was notified today Gerry Ouellette will be undergoing heart surgery on monday March 23 and has asked for prayers. I tried to send it to Elizabeth M. but for some reason the mail was undeliverable. No reply nec. I know your busy.

  21. Hi Tom! Would you mind checking out my blog? trackmuch.wordpress.com
You have been such an influential figure in my tracking and wilderness living development and I just wanted to show this to you!!

  22. Hi Tom, just wanted to thank you for your dedication to teaching all of us. I have read 6 of your books so far and they have taught me so much. The only thing is that they have got me loving the outdoors much more than I used to and due to strict family rules I am not able to spend much time outside. They really consider the woods a very dangerous place, not to be entered without one of themselves. It’s tough. They only walk on the gravel road. They’re also afraid of chiggers and ticks,(which we have alot of) and they think that the woods are always harboring criminals. I am not allowed outside alone, and I’m already in my teens. Mom is paranoid when it comes to nature, yet when it comes to civilization she is much more lax. She also hates the heat and the cold and gets attacked by insects more than I do. I’m also worried about the economy collapse, and I can’t even start a fire without matches. I have tried and failed. But I do believe that I am much better off than those in the cities. Enjoy your freedom of the wilderness, and explore it for me, brother.

  23. To be clear, Tom…my level and the firmness of my commitment is unquestioningly absolute… ever since the very first Pine Barrens philosophy, I’ve been committed to this Path and re-commit to it often. My life has undergone tremendous change because of the commitments I made – all for the good of everything. I’d make that same commitment again in a heartbeat – and often do.

BUT – I just do not have the money to attend classes, not even online ones right now. As much as I would love to attend Apprentice and other classes, I simply cannot. Perhaps things will change. But for now, I have to miss whatever it is you’re teaching in these classes; it just kills me to miss what I know could be critical information. Your courses dangle like wrapped candy in front of my spirit… teasing, always just out of reach… and wrapped, because I don’t fully know what’s in them.

I am in the process of writing a book, my first. It has been churning around in the back of my mind for some 40 years… including the many years with you (since 1985 when I took my Standard in Hackettstown). So perhaps if I get any income out of that, I’ll be able to attend classes. Right now all I have is full disability income, and sometimes at the end of the month, even that runs out.

If you ever wondered why it is “Sandra” doesn’t come to your courses anymore, it isn’t for lack of wanting to. It’s just the ever-present logistical obstacle… getting enough of those little green frog skins to pay for the course…

Be well… You are – and will always be – very present in my mind and daily life.

    Much love & respect,
    Sandra Essary
    Bakersfield, CA
